Over 1,70,000 dust and garbage issues resolved in Delhi (2021-ongoing)

According to a study by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in 2018, approximately 45% of the PM2.5 load in Delhi is due to non-point or dispersed sources

Dispersed source pollution originates from diffused sources, rather than from a single, discrete one. Sources include malba on public land, garbage and biomass burning, dust from construction activity, and so on. While individual sources do not pollute the environment, collectively they contribute considerable amounts of pollutants to the atmosphere.

Our program on dispersed sources of air pollution is one of our largest interventions.  Our team works closely with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as well as other Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to address a significant source of pollution in Delhi.

The program found its genesis in 2021 as an 8-month pilot program with the SDMC.  This has since been scaled up. We have now expanded to cover all 250 wards under the unified MCD, and liaise with 9 land-owning government agencies (including the PWD, DDA, and I&FC, among others).

Our three-step process

Our project adheres to a simple workflow. We have institutionalised a three-step process – identifying dispersed source issues, allocating them to relevant officials, and ensuring effective resolution.

Throughout this process, A-PAG’s Project Management Units (PMUs) provide review and monitoring support to the MCD. Their aim is to aid each zone’s Deputy Commissioner in guaranteeing successful project implementation.

In addition to monitoring assistance, A-PAG also provides support in training and sensitisation – our sensitisation toolkit is a key resource in this effort. We have trained over 2000 officials across MCD and ULBs in Delhi NCR.

We have also worked with the government on improving their Smart City 311 app, which automates significant parts of our three-step workflow.

As of December 2023, over 190,000 issues have been identified, of which 89.5%, which is about 170,000  have been resolved!
